Mike Pompeo, who served as the head of the CIA and then secretary of state under former US President Donald Trump, has been named a director of Kyivstar, Ukraine's largest mobile telecoms operator.

Pompeo, who led the CIA in 2017 and 2018 before becoming secretary of state until the end of Trump's term as president, said he aims to encourage private enterprise as the company prepares for economic recovery and the reconstruction of Ukraine.

“It is through private enterprise and investments that Ukraine will secure its economic future and success, and I look forward to contributing to this laudable effort," Pompeo said.

Kyivstar, owned by Amsterdam-registered VEON, also said it will work with Impact Investments, where Pompeo serves as a partner, to secure support "in a number of key strategic initiatives regarding Ukraine."

Kyivstar, which said in June that it plans to spend $600 million over the next three years on infrastructure as it moves toward reconstruction, has 4,000 employees and serves 24.3 million mobile and 1.1 million fixed-line users.
