Military activity has significantly degraded surface water quality in Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region, raising concerns that key rivers and canals used for drinking water and irrigation could become unsafe for human consumption, according to new research.
A study by a group of Ukrainian scientists found an increase in concentrations of phosphates and ammonium—direct byproducts of military explosions—as well as chlorides and sulfates linked to the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric dam and related infrastructure.
