Ukraine is laying the groundwork for small modular reactors to form part of its post-war energy buildout, with Kyiv advancing regulatory changes, evaluating reactor technologies and considering destroyed thermal power plants as possible SMR sites.
The effort comes as Ukraine looks beyond replacing generating capacity destroyed during the war and seeks to rebuild its energy system around nuclear power while reducing its longstanding reliance on Russia’s nuclear industry, according to a new briefing from UK-based research firm Ridgeway Information.
