Drinking water supply, wastewater treatment and environmental monitoring should be Ukraine's top water-sector reconstruction priorities, while irrigation and dam reconstruction will require a longer-term effort, according to a new study that ranks reconstruction of the country's water infrastructure by urgency and importance.
The study, published in the latest issue of the journal of the World Water Council, argues that different parts of the water sector face fundamentally different reconstruction challenges. Rather than treating water infrastructure as a single rebuilding programme, the authors classify each component according to its pre-war condition, wartime damage and reconstruction priority.
