War disrupts traditional smuggling routes in Transcarpathia, study shows

Transcarpathia, Ukraine's westernmost region bordering Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania, has long been a smuggling hotspot. Deep-rooted corruption, a weak state presence, and resilient cross-border ethnic networks have entrenched an illicit economy dominated by tobacco, goods, drug, and human smuggling.
