Ukraine's government has appointed the former mayor of the western city of Zhytomyr, Serhiy Sukhomlyn, as head of the State Agency for Reconstruction and Development of Infrastructure, the government's envoy to parliament, Taras Melnychuk, said Friday in a post on Telegram.

The agency was previously headed by Mustafa Nayyem, who resigned in June, citing "systemic obstacles that do not allow him to effectively carry out his duties."

Nayyem, an Afghan-Ukrainian former journalist, said in his resignation letter that the agency's budget for road restoration and maintenance projects was canceled and that its employees' salaries were reduced, among other issues.

Prior to that, Nayyem told Bloomberg that Ukrainian Prime Minister Shmyhal rejected his request to participate in the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Berlin on June 11-12, which was designed to mobilize international support for the rebuilding of the country.

Since Nayem's resignation, the agency has temporarily been led by Roman Komendant, the former deputy head of the State Highway Agency of Ukraine for issues of digital development, digital transformations, and digitalization.
