Ukrainian state-owned gas producer Naftogaz announced the discovery of a "promising" gas deposit in a gas field in the Carpathian mountains that had been considered depleted.
Testing of the deposit showed a gas flow rate of more than 200,000 cubic meters per day, the highest UGV in western Ukraine in 20 years, Naftogaz said in a press release. The new well was drilled to a depth of 1,600 meters.
The discovery stems from a push to wield more modern technology to reduce dependence on Russian fossil fuels throughout Europe, according to the company.
"The well was laid based on the interpretation of new data from previously conducted seismic 3D surveys," the company said. "It was put into operation in a very short time, with pipelines built and the gas preparation plant modernized."
