Former US President Donald Trump, whose re-election campaign has intensified in energy since the assassination attempt against him last weekend, pledged to end the war between Russia and Ukraine in a telephone call Friday with Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky.

"I appreciate President Zelenskyy for reaching out because I, as your next President of the United States, will bring peace to the world and end the war that has cost so many lives and devastated countless innocent families," Trump said of the phone call. "Both sides will be able to come together and negotiate a deal that ends the violence and paves a path forward to prosperity."

In a comment on his Truth Social social media account, Trump said he had a "very good phone call" with Zelensky but offered no further details on his plan to end the war if he wins in November elections.

On the Ukrainian presidential website, Zelensky's office said he and Trump "agreed to discuss in a personal meeting what steps can be taken to restore a just peace for Ukraine as soon as possible."
